This energy transition will have a far-reaching impact. Saldanha Bay Industrial Development Zone\u2019s (SBIDZ) original market focus as a service hub for offshore exploration and production (E&amp;P) vessels, such as oil rigs, must change. However, even with investments moving from new offshore oil wells into gas, offshore wind, and onshore renewable energy alternatives, offshore hydrocarbons will continue to play a role during a just transition. It still provides a value chain of needs and a lifecycle orientation, including decommissioning, recycling, and retrofitting vessels and equipment in that space.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The SBIDZ can be a holistic base for \u201ctransition\u201d technologies in the energy and maritime industries and the traditional markets of oil and gas, maritime engineering, logistics and services for a long time, any which way one cuts it. We have the deepest \u2013 undeveloped \u2013 port in the Southern Hemisphere, and it\u2019s already focused on bulk carriers and has a Freeport status.<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><b>THE WAY FORWARD FOR THE MARITIME SECTOR<\/b><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Maritime shipping accounts for 3% of all global emissions, <\/span>but 90% of world trade is moved by sea. To put this in perspective, cargo shipping creates one billion tonnes of climate pollution each year \u2013 the equivalent of what an industrialised country like Germany produces annually.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8cefcd2 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8cefcd2\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a9d014b\" data-id=\"a9d014b\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-69c0eae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"69c0eae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>During COP26, 22 industry leaders and politicians signed the Clydebank Declaration, committing to decarbonising the maritime industry by developing six green shipping corridors \u2013 zero-emission routes \u2013 between two or more ports by 2050. Add to this, nine big-name brands, including Amazon, IKEA, Michelin, Unilever and Patagonia, announced that by 2040, they plan to shift 100% of their ocean freight to vessels powered by zero-carbon.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d992eca elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d992eca\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-908bf86\" data-id=\"908bf86\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3981b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c3981b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\"><b>THERE ARE OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:<\/b><\/p><ul><li class=\"p1\"><p class=\"p1\">The First Movers Coalition has set commitments for using zero-emission fuels by 2030.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"p1\"><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Shipping carriers are to set a target of at least 5% of their deep-sea shipping to be powered by zero-emission <\/span>fuels by 2030, enabled by ships capable of using zero-emission fuels.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"p1\"><p class=\"p1\">Cargo owners should target shipping at least 10% of their goods on vessels using zero-emission fuels by 2030 and 100% by 2040.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7875019 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7875019\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b52bf92\" data-id=\"b52bf92\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0225119 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0225119\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\">First, we need to ask several questions. What role can the SBIDZ play in supplying, servicing, and maintaining the new fleets? For the approximately 80 000 heavy ocean-going cargo vessels that spend months at sea transporting global goods, there is no real alternative to fossil fuels, at least not yet. The most promising technology is either hydrogen or synthetic fuels, such as methanol or ammonia, created using green hydrogen.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Second, is this where the future of work in the sector is heading, and how can SBIDZ prepare?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-04adea2 elementor-section-content-middle elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"04adea2\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7714bb0\" data-id=\"7714bb0\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2458c8a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2458c8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><b>STRATEGY<\/b><\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Technology and big data are increasingly used to measure environmental performance, for example, in the shipping industry, such as a vessel\u2019s daily emissions. Artificial intelligence (AI) will harness accurate and desegregated emission calculations \u2013 data that is invaluable to the financial sector. Digitalisation makes it possible to improve energy efficiency and optimise logistics resources.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The Saldanha Bay Innovation Campus aims to bridge the technologies the future needs in shipping and general maritime-focused engineering and manufacturing.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The zone itself is uniquely positioned in the Port of Saldanha as a Freeport, making it very attractive for \u201csmart\u201d manufacturers and suppliers to be in the zone.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">No doubt, the COP26 decisions and discussions will impact the maritime sector. Even without the after-effects of the pandemic, it will not be business as usual, but the transition to decarbonise presents significant business opportunities.
